Launch of the zine ‘TijDschiFt’ and presentation of the book ‘Freinet Techniques, Freinettecknieken, Techniques Freinet’.
Between the 1920s and the 1980s, elementary schools practicing the experimental pedagogical model of Élise and Célestin Freinet made movable type, publishing and the printing press central to teaching children to read and write. Informed by this experience, this four-day program will experiment with and reflect on the relationship between (our) literacy and printing and publishing.
The launch of the zine ‘TijDschiFt’ will conclude the four-day workshop at fanfare, in which a group of Masters students from ArteC (Paris) write, print and publish in cooperation with children from the Kinkerbuurt (Amsterdam). The workshop is meant to test and play with so-called ‘Freinet techniques’ of ‘free writing,’ ‘classroom printing’ and ’school magazine’ in the context of a multi-lingual group of adults and children.
‘Freinet Techniques, Freinettecknieken, Techniques Freinet’ is a book by Paul Gangloff, with texts by César Rogers and Marie Preston. It assembles more than a hundred reproductions of typographic works from the Freinet schools with their translations in English and Dutch. The book is published by Rollo Press and made possible by the Creative Industry Funds NL and the Centre National des Arts Plastiques.
See you there!
The workshop and public program are made possible with the support of Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and ArteC (Paris).
